A Look into the Life of IHG - One or Two Questions at a Time

Why Harley Davidson?
Because they are sexy badass bikes.  I love the rumble they make when you crank the throttle.  Harley Davidson is as Amercian as baseball and apple pie.  It's just the motorcycle I always wanted to own one day and now I do!!

Is there someone in the motorcycle community that you would like to hang with for a day and have never had the opportunity to before and why?
I would love to hang with all the people that I've met through blogging that I haven't been able to meet yet.(Boston, Caveman, Viking Dave and BB, Willy D, Ms. M., Ronman, Mr. Motorcycle, Dan from Lowrider in the Wind and that one guy that fell off the face of the earth named Joker.  What ever happened to that guy?)  All the bikers I'm friends with on Facebook.  I would love to hang with Sara Liberte and Roadside Marty.  There are so many individuals in the motorcycle community that I would love to just sit and listen to their stories.  Bikers are freaking interesting people.  I really would love to meet Willie G and Gloria Struck.  And it would have been amazing to have known Samantha Morgan Storm!

One of my favorite biker bands!

Billy Lane's Air Force Bike Build

Billy Lane built an amazing Air Force Tribute Bike that was unveiled at Rolling Thunder this year. It's great to see he hasn't lost his passion for building works of art!

Girls Wrench Too! Meet Chris Gibbany from Boneyard Choppers

About a month ago I received an e-mail inquiring if I profile women riders/builders.  I'd say that this woman rider/builder e-mailed the right person!!  I love seeing women who forge the way for all the women out there that love motorcycling or anything moto related.  I'm excited to introduce you all to Chris Gibbany and her passion for motorcycles, cars, living an amazing cheap life, and hedgehogs!!

Give us a bio about yourself.
I am 39 years old, married to my soul mate, Gabe. I was born in California but raised here in Arkansas, currently residing in Harrison. I have worked a bunch of minimum wage jobs only to find that just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it in fact DID, so I have been self employed for 6 years now. I raise and rescue hedgehogs and am one of only about 30 breeders in the whole USA.  I help my husband build vintage bikes (calling ourselves Boneyard Choppers), and am an extreme couponer. I also sell T-shirts, sell vitamins and essential oils and experiment with all kinds of things. I have raised and sold meal worms, sold and shipped cat food, been a professional wedding photographer for 10 years and now I play the "credit card game". I also enter sweepstakes and write a blog called Amazing cheap life.

Was there something specific that drew you into the motorcycle lifestyle?
I've always loved bikes and cars- in fact, that's really all I ever think about. As far as a “lifestyle”, I'm not real sure what that means. I just live the way I want to, do what I want and put every dime I get into all of my toys. I have actually went down to 2 cars (first time since I was 19) because bikes are easier to maintain, take up less room, we can build them in the house, and instead of several thousand dollars for a paint job, at best it costs a couple hundred.

How long have you been riding?
I've been riding since I was 16. I learned to ride before I learned to drive.

What was your first motorcycle?
First bike I learned to ride was a 185 Yamaha Exciter, first bike I bought for myself was a 1990 Yamaha DT Enduro. I bought it during my third year of college in 1993.

What do you currently ride?
I am currently riding a 1981 Harley Ironhead that we built, that I call my “Billy Bike”, because I built it to look like a "billy bad ass". I also ride a Yamaha TW enduro but am fixing to sell it and build a BSA or Triumph to use as my multi-purpose bike. I am almost done with my 1956 Panhead (kick only) that we have been building in the living room for 2 years. I also bought another 'secret” project as I always like to be building something in the living room.

How do you feel when you are riding?
I feel like riding gives you a certain form of “power” and it gives you the sense of freedom that makes all of your troubles disappear. The feeling I get when I am riding is the same feeling I used to get when I was drag racing- except that the riding lasts a lot longer and is WAY cheaper! When my thoughts are taking over my brain, or I just need to clear my head, nothing does that better than getting on a bike and just blasting down the road. I also like to talk to GOD when I ride and since I like to “lolly-gag” when I ride, my mind is always thinking about my next big project or some goal that I would like to accomplish.

Is there a motto that you live by?
“You only live once, so you better make it count”

Why Harley Davidson?
I really love the look and appeal of the old vintage Harleys. Although I started out on small metric bikes, nothing looks OR sounds like the real old iron of yesterday. When I start thinking about an old bike, I wonder about it's owner, and where they went and how that person felt when they owned the bike. The sheer fact that something that old is still around is amazing to me and I wonder why more people aren't into the old bikes. I like the history and I also am BIG into “reduce, reuse and recycle” so I like the fact that we can keep the old bikes. “Old iron never dies”.

Do you feel you are treated differently because you choose to ride a motorcycle?
I feel like I get more respect because I ride. When I am wearing my Boneyard Choppers work shirt, I notice people not only won't talk to me, but they don't even want to be caught staring at me. But when I wear a low-cut shirt, it's a whole different ballgame. One day I was wearing my work shirt and this guy starting asking me about it. He then told me he had a 57 Fl, and I said “Yeah, I have an FL too”. I grew up around here and have always had hot rods and raced, so most people know me and I don't think they think much about it- just Chris doing something else motor-related.

Is there really a motorcycle “wave” or is it just something we do to freak non-riders out?
I still get it all the time. Back in the day when there were fewer bikes on the road, it was cool to meet another biker but now with so many people riding, it's just irritating. When I am driving my Corvette, other Corvette drivers wave at me and when my husband is driving his old Jeep, other Jeep owners wave at him. I think it is an acknowledgment that “Hey look, I am riding too” or in a vehicle “Hey, I am driving a Corvette too”. I don't mind it when I am in one of my cars, because you don't see too many on the road. But if everyone was driving a Corvette, (1) I'd get tired of waving and (2) I'd sell my Vette!

What do you think of helmet laws?
I believe in freedom and the freedom of choice. I personally think that EVERYTHING should be legal- all drugs, prostitution, assault weapons, Diet Coke, etc and that WE as responsible people should have the right to choose and if we make the wrong choice, then as in everything else, there are consequences. I think that we should have morals, use good judgment and 'everything in moderation'. So I think there should be fewer laws, fewer rules and less government interference.

Do loud pipes really save lives?
YES! With so many distracted drivers, doing everything BUT driving, the more that you can do to get their attention, the better. It makes me so sick to see everyone on their cell phones and I cannot EVEN believe people drive down the road while texting! I usually try to wear a bright shirt and bandanna and I will swerve back and forth in my lane, thinking that maybe it will gets someones attention if they are not paying enough attention. I still think that people who ride make better drivers and that if everyone had to ride, the world would be a safer place.

Do you have any mentors or heroes?
No, I would say not. I've always said I am my own hero, which means it is up to me to make a good life for myself and accomplish all the things I want to do in this life before I die. Now I do have a lot of respect for people in the business, especially women who have fought their way to the top.

Is there someone in the motorcycle community that you would like to hang with for a day and have never had the opportunity to before and why?
Yeah, ask anyone who knows me and of course that would be Jay Leno! For so many reasons- he's super funny, has around 200 cars and bikes and is child-free!

Do you have a favorite rally or event?
We don't go to a lot of rallies. We hit some of the local shows and always make the Branson Vintage Show and Meet, but when you have a lot of animals, you can't really be gone for long and I don't know anyone who would be willing to take care of them. Also, we only make $25,000 a year and we can't honestly justify going to a lot of rallies when (1) It would cost us money and (2) we would rather use that money to buy more parts for what we do have or save that money and buy another toy.

Do you have a favorite place to ride and why?
YES-on pavement! I ride almost daily when the weather is decent. I like to just ride into towns, go to thrift stores with my back pack and see what I can find. All riding is good.

What is the wildest thing that has happened to you on the road?
It involved several cops surrounding us, a ticket, a mirror getting kicked off and us NOT going to jail!

What has your most memorable ride or trip been?
Every time we make it back in one piece, without parts falling off or us not getting a ticket is a good and memorable trip.

Are there any lessons that you’ve learned on the road that stand out the most?
Always have a cell phone with you.

Do you like riding with a group or are you more of a lone rider?
ALONE. Since I like to “lolly gag”, I don't like anyone pressuring me to go faster or me having to wait for other people to catch up if I am in the 'go-fast” mood. I don't like to have to look into my little mirror and worry about where the other person might be and wonder if they are mad cause I'm going too fast or if I am going too slow. I enjoy being alone and riding alone.

What has your greatest accomplishment been?
Not having children! In my 20's I had my tubes tied after my first husband tried to force me to have kids. I have to say I knew as a kid that I didn't want children and it has to be my biggest accomplishment that has allowed me to go on with my life, doing what I want and buying what I want and living the life that I have always wanted.

Do you feel like there are divisions in the motorcycle community because of the type or brand of motorcycle you ride?
Yeah I think the stereotype of Sportsters still being a “woman's bike” still exists and when I meet those type of people, I know that they in fact know nothing of the history of Harley Davidson and no matter how much you tell them, they will go on thinking “yeah right, just a woman's bike”. There are still some people who think that if you aren't riding a Harley then you might as well not be riding. I think all those people are idiots! If you ride, you ride. Doesn't matter what brand it is or what size it is. I think that people who believe in these things just do it to make themselves look better but it only works if they are in the company of people who feel the same way. A person who truly loves the machine does not care.

If you knew this was your last day on earth, what would you do?
Spend it with my husband, pray to GOD and eat lots of ice cream, candy, and everything else that I wouldn't normally overindulge in.

When you are not riding what do you enjoy doing?
Driving my 81 Corvette and my race car, a 1978 Z-28 that I've had for 20 years, hitting thrift stores and yard sales, hunting mushrooms in the Spring, hunting deer in the Fall, shooting guns, gardening, reading self help and non-fiction books, tye-dying,and always trying something new, I am currently learning to weld. I also like entering competitive contests such as bike shows, car shows, Halloween costume contests, tattoo and burnout contests. I have also entered hedgehogs in a Hedgehog Show and took home "Reserve Best in Show", "Grand Champion", 2 first place and one third place ribbon. I once won a contest for saving the most money, a contest for writing about saving money and I was selected to be on ABC Nightly News before the show Extreme Couponing came out but Wal Mart wouldn't allow video cameras so I didn't get to appear. I am BIG into natural and alternative therapies- I love getting reflexology, massages and colonics done. I make all of my own cleaning supplies and use very few chemical laden products. I like to dye my hair pink (all vegan) and it has been pink on and off since I was 16 in 1989. I collect anything with hedgehogs, am always looking for cool motor related art for my house and I like buying bandannas, cool scarves, knitted hats, fingerless gloves, patches for my jeans, buttons and pins and would one day maybe like to design clothes.

If you could change anything about yourself what would it be?
I would be independently wealthy! But since "necessity is the mother of invention", I guess I will keep on inventing a new source of income!

What do you think makes a "Biker"?
I think the term “biker” has been thrown around so much that no one wants to be associated with it and everyone who does use it is probably dressed in head-to toe leather. The real definition of “biker”, of what I think makes a "biker" would be one who puts everything into their bike(s), a person who loves the machine so much that they sacrifice other areas of their lives for it, and who lives and breathes motorcycles. A biker is one who protects his bike like it is his kid, who has to be seated next to a window so that he can watch his bike, and a person that when he sees some kid put scratches on his bike, runs out the damn door screaming, not caring if he's going to jail or not. I have always felt like my cars and my bikes have "feelings" and they are not just some piece of metal- I have poured countless hours of time and money into making the machine be just what I want. My cars and bikes ARE my kids!

Do you feel you are a role model for the women of the motorcycle community?
I don't feel I am a role- model per se, but I think that because I am so driven and so passionate about my toys, on such a small yearly wage, that YES, someone could look at that and say “Well, if she can do it on that small amount of money, then so can I”. A person has to have their priorities straight and I have always known what came first. Even when I was younger I never got my ears pierced because I didn't want to have to buy earrings when I could be using that money or saving it for something else. I saved all of my allowance as a kid and when I got into college on scholarships, I was able to buy 2 Camaros and my first motorcycle. I have been thrifty my whole life.

Do you have any advice for women that are thinking about moving to the front of the motorcycle?
If you really want to do it- do it for the right reasons- NOT to get attention or to pick up men. There are SO many women around here that do it for that very reason. I would tell them to start small, I think learning to ride on a dirt bike or enduro is probably the best way to learn. Learn the mechanics of the bike and then take the course. Every woman I know who has never rode before, goes out and buys the biggest, heaviest Harley they can afford and then when they drop it or can't pick it up, they give up.

Tell us anything else you would like us to know about you.
I am being featured in the next issue of Throttle Gals magazine. You can read more about my lifelong involvement with cars, racing, bikes and the lifestyle in there. I also have pictures from 20 years ago that go along with the story. I can't wait for it to come out!

Do you have a favorite swear word?
Yes, most definitely.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished "Coming Apart- The state of white America 1960-2010" by Charles Murray, "200 quick cash jobs guaranteed self-employment alternatives" by Todd Abernathy, and "Back to basics - how to learn and enjoy traditional American skills" published by Reader's Digest. I am a reviewer for about 10 different publishers so I get books free. I am currently reading 'Greater" by Steven Furtick and "The coming revolution" by Dr. Richard Lee. Between the local library, all the free books that I receive and all the free magazine subscriptions I get, I never run out of good material to read. The library is the best way to get an education for free and you get to choose your own subjects. I usually focus on one subject a year to learn about. Last year it was vitamins, oils, natural remedies, living healthy, etc. This year it is more on the state of the economy, the zombies (don't get me started), and ways to be more self sufficient.

What music are you currently listening to?
John Conlee "Rose Colored Glasses", Alabama "My Home's in Alabama" and Bob Seger "Still the Same". I've got some Neil Diamond coming in Tuesday! I love all kinds of music - Metallica, Kid Rock, Hank Jr, Waylon, Willie, Merle, AC/DC, but lately and for a while now I have really went back to my roots of what I grew up listening to which was good old country!

Do you have any pets?
YES! My American Staffordshire Terrier (aka the largest of the pit-bull breed), Solomon. I call him my son. He lives in the house and we rescued him from the Humane Society about 6 years ago. He was on the chopping block to be put down and I went through a very tedious process to track him down once I saw his picture in the local paper. I also have 25 hedgehogs! I have had hedgehogs as pets for almost 15 years. I LOVE them and can't imagine ever living without them. I have had all kinds of different animals as pets- squirrel, rabbit, guinea pigs, ferret, snapping turtle, frogs, fish, and different breeds of dogs but I am in love with the Am Staff and hedgehogs!

A Look into the Life of IHG - One or Two Questions at a Time

Was there something specific that drew you into the motorcycle lifestyle?

I first noticed motorcycles in Jr. High.  It looked like so much fun that I couldn't wait to ride on one but my Mom forbid me from catching a ride with anyone.  She said to me..." I better not ever have to come to the morgue to identify your body because you road on one of those things."  Well needless to say in high school I got my first ride on the back of a crotch rocket in the rain.  The entire ride down University Avenue, the words of my Mom repeated over and over in my head.  As you can see I'm still living.  I caught rides now and then from guys I dated.  It was just something fun at the time.

I remember thinking that this one chick in high school was so freaking cool.  She would ride her motorcycle to school.  She was such a rebel chick and no one messed with her.  And I'd see the SOS around town and thought they looked so badass with their colors on.  The individuals I saw in my home town that road motorcycles were just so different then the people I was used to being around.  They all seemed more free and less uptight about life.  They weren't the "normals".

It wasn't until I moved to Des Moines that I really got into motorcycles again.  My previous life never went in that direction.  After Dan and I moved to Des Moines, I discovered our apartment was right next to this place called Porky's.  They had bike nights every Thursday night during the summer.  I would wander over and admire all the beautiful motorcycles and I felt at home with all the leather clad patrons.  After my trip with my friend Kristen to Sturgis in 2004 I was totally hooked again.  I came home and talked Dan into buying our first Harley.

This is kind of fun!  If there are any questions you've been wanting to know about me either leave it in comments or send me an e-mail to motorcyclesandskulls@yahoo.com.

I love finding cool motorcycle videos.  This one made me smile!  Looks like these Cats are having a SWELL time!  :)

Kuryakyn ISO Wings - LOVE THEM!

Comfort on your motorcycle is so important, especially when you are taking a longer trip. The one thing about my motorcycle that I wasn't digging were the foot-pegs. I always have felt like my feet were just dangling out there and with any strong gust of wind would practically blow off. The foot boards used on touring bikes really don't work on Sportsters so it's been tough to find something that I liked and that really would make a significant difference.

I mentioned to Dan that I really wanted something different for my bike and wouldn't you know it, he did some research and found me these great Kuryakyn ISO Wings. I put them on Sadie today and WOW, what a difference. No more feeling like my feet were just dangling out there.

I was able to adjust them and they are just like mini foot boards. From the short ride that I took today, I can tell that they are going to add so much comfort and stability for me when I'm out on the road riding Sadie.

Are You Superstitious??

Are you superstitious? Do you have a certain routine thing that you do before you ride or while you ride? Do you have something that you carry with you on each ride? Is there a certain article of clothing that you have to wear each and every time you ride?

I would say I'm quite superstitious when it comes to riding. I have a bag of little treasures that I always carry with me on a ride, including 3 guitar picks(Sixx, Frehley, & Keifer), 3 Harley Davidson Poker Chips, 3 crosses, a Mother Mary relic, an Angel of Hope coin, a motorcycle pin, and a piece of chrome that my Dad gave me that says Harley Davidson on it.(I just noticed that the number 3 comes up 3 times here...oh my) I also have 3 "I'm an Old Dirty Biker" pins but those won't always be in there once I find 3 ODBs to give them too.

I also carry the piece of the broken turn signal that my Rider's Edge instructor gave me after I passed the course. This was a result of a mishap I had attempting one of the course skills in our practice. It reminds me that the front brake is only your friend when you use it correctly.

At the beginning of each motorcycle adventure I say 5 Hail Mary prayers in a row. Mary has a special meaning to me and praying to her is something I've always done.

I can't be the only one that does this stuff. Come on, don't be afraid!!! Share!!!

High on the HOG - The MeanStreet Riders

The debut LP by the MeanStreet Riders is due out this summer and I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy to listen to and review.

The MeanStreet Riders are a group of musicians that also love to ride. The members of the band are Shannon Wallace, Dowlin Mayfield, Eric Lampley, Greg Torres, Kevin LaCour, and Fritz Froeschner. They decided to form their band in 2008 when they were riding Highway 129 "Deals Gap" aka "The Dragon". The song "129" tells about leaving a love behind and riding the "129". It's definately a song that any rider out there can relate to. When we saddle up and roll down the highway, hopefully we can leave all the bad stuff behind for a brief time.

The MeanSreet Riders sound alot like the Eagles. I also heard a little Molly Hatchet influence and there was a bluesy Allman Brothers feel too. I would recommend this CD as a travel enhancement for your next ride since the songs are very motorcycle and riding related. It would also be a great cd to add into your next party music rotation. After listening to the cd multiple times I found myself singing along. The song "High on the Hog" is very catchy and it's how I feel every time I ride Sadie. I really feel like I don't need anything else while I'm rolling down those back roads and I truly feel "High on the Hog". The MeanStreet Riders put their love of motorcycles and the open road to music. Their CD will bring out your own memories of past rides and rallies. It will remind you of people that you met along the way and the ones that have influenced your life. It will create excitement in your soul and it will make you feel excitement for your next great ride!

I wish The MeanStreet Riders great success with their new LP. Music and Motorcycles, a combination that sings to your soul. I really love their motto - Remember Life’s too short for traffic so Rock N Roll on the open Road!! I also like that they stand for FREEDOM and our Freedom as Riders!

Visit The MeanStreet Riders website where you can listen to clips of their CD for yourself. The First 10,000 visitors that sign up on their site receive a private screening of their Rockementary.

Keep the Rubber Side Down - An Interview with Rick Slark

A few of us in the Harley community follow a guy named Rick Slark who writes a blog called Keep the Rubber Side Down. We also follow each other on Facebook and the banter about Harley Riders vs Riders of other motorcycles has been quite comical at times. We all give Rick a very hard time that he actually has Harley envy. I thought it would be interesting to get to know Rick a little more so he agreed to do an interview.

Rick is from Columbus, OH and currently resides with his wife Michelle in Springfield, OH. Rick has two sons, Jonathan and Ethan and an Alaskan Malamute named Dakota. Rick's passions include writing, touring on a motorcycle, cigars, and starting small businesses. He also attempts to follow Christ which he does some days better than others.

When did you first discover motorcycles?

My childhood friend got a Honda 50cc as a gift and we rode it up and down the sidewalks in our neighborhood. I think that was the beginning of the madness.

What was your first motorcycle?

A friend was moving into a tiny apartment and had no storage so he gave me his 1975 Kawasaki H1-500. I love that bike and hope to add one to my stable of motorcycles one day.

How many motorcycles have you owned over the years?

Not many. I tend to fall in love with them so I keep them for long periods of time. They are like my friends. I know many people buy and sell motorcycles quite often, but I have never been that guy. I guess I am too much of a romantic.

What are you riding now and why?

Currently we have four bikes, 1985 Honda Nighthawk 450, 2003 Yamaha V-Star 1100, 1996 Triumph Daytona 1200, and a 1000 BMW R1100RT.

Most of the time I ride the BMW. My friends call me a super slabber because my style of riding is more long distance riding. The RT is the perfect long distance bike and therefore the one I ride the most.

Why did you decide to begin blogging about motorcycles?

For me it began as an outlet, a place to write down what I was thinking about at the time. I wanted to document some of my cycling experiences, the skills I had learned, and what's more, my mistakes. From there it just evolved and continues to do so.

What is your site called? Why and how did you decide on the title of your blog?

The site is called "Keep the Rubber Side Down" and I chose it because I think this phrase speaks to the camaraderie of the motorcycling community and secondly, because one of the main purposes of the site is to offer stories and tips that will help make one a better rider.

"Keep the Rubber Side Down" is a phrase often used by motorcyclists to encourage one another to be safe while on the road. It is also a great metaphor to be used as we journey down the road called LIFE!

Do you have any other blogs?

Yes, I have Rick's Ramblings.

What types of subjects do you enjoy blogging about?

At Keep the Rubber Side Down I strictly deal with issues pertaining to motorcycling. My readers are not there to read my views on other subjects. I reserve Rick's Ramblings to deal with other topics that interest me such as spirituality, books, humor, etc.

Do you do freelance work for other motorcycle publications or websites?

Yes, I have written for our local paper and a few online magazines, but honestly, keeping my two sites fresh, and working on my book, takes up most of my writing time.

Do you do any creative writing?

I always have a pen and pad on me. I write everywhere I am. I am always listening for something that will spark my creativity.

You use video submissions from time to time. What do you use to do those?

I use a Flip HD camera. Easy to use and fabulous video.

How many states have you traveled?
I have visited most of them, but a couple years ago I decided to ride my motorcycle in every state. To date I am up to 31 states.

What is your favorite state to ride in?

As I mentioned, I haven't been in all of them, so I can't definitively answer that, but I love riding in Tennessee and along the east coast.

How does riding enrich your life?

Big question. Riding, especially long distances, affords me the time to move beyond the surface things that normally clutter my brain. It is the time I am able to connect to that which is important and meaningful in my life.

Do you enjoy attending rallies?

I tend to avoid rallies and riding in large groups. I am most able to enjoy the very essence of my riding style when I ride alone or perhaps with one or two others, but I far prefer to be alone.

What do you think makes a "Biker"?

I despise this term.

Be honest...do you really dislike Harley Davidson Motorcycles as much as you seem to?

Let me just say, I don't believe they warrant the following they have. I simply don't get it. It is not the motorcycles as much as the few riders who make me want to hurl my Cheerios. I love all motorcycles whether they are new, old, big, small, rusted or shiny, and yes; American or foreign. It seems to me some HD folks give off the vibe that if you aren't riding a HD you are a second class citizen and I think that takes away some of the joy of cycling for those riders who can't afford a Harley. Especially when the majority of those riders learned to ride on another brand.

I always ask a couple of fun questions like the guy on "In the Actors Studio" does.

What music are you currently listening to?

Moon Dance by Van Morrison. Music does not play a crucial role in my life.

What are you currently reading?

I am always reading something, be it "Newsweek", or a Triumph service manual. I am a task reader and very seldom read for entertainment. Here is a list of books I am reading now.

They Say I Say - A book about formal writing.
The Oath by Frank Peretti
The Devil Can Ride
The Treasury of Religious Verse

Thanks to Rick for answering the questions that he did. Enjoyed getting to know a non HD rider a little more and it's always good to learn someone elses perspective on motorcycling.

A little IHG Trivia

I'd like to thank Rick Slark for posting this on his site.http://keeptherubbersidedown.net/ It's fun getting to know the other bloggers a little and it's fun to share it with the rest of the world too.

Favorite brand of bike? Harley Davidson (Indian Motorcycles come in a close 2nd)

Favorite color of bike? Black

Do you always wear a helmet? Years past, no. This season, yes. I saw a motor scooter/car accident and it really made me think. I do believe that it should be the rider's choice. I'm against helmet laws.

Most miles ridden in a day? 476 miles Since I ride on the back I just go with the flow!

Do you belong to a riding club? Not currently Dan and I are pretty much Lone Wolves.

How many bikes do you currently own? 1

Do you wave at passing bikers? Yes...I seriously do the biker wave to everyone on two wheels...even bicycles. :)~ I find it rude when people don't wave back. I try to make myself believe they didn't see us. Yeah Right!

How many brand t-shirts do you own? 5 I'm not really into HD clothing. Two of the ones that I have were free.

Do people think you are obsessed with motorcycles? Yes, people think I'm motorcycle nuts. I have a HD bathroom and my desk at work has pictures of the bike and my biker friends. I even have 3 little mini HD motorcycles sitting on my shelf. I'm obsessed!

What is your favorite type of riding? I love long distance trips. I'm not really into just riding around town. Dan gets too annoyed when he has to stop at numerous stop lights. Plus I love seeing our great country.

Do you have any riding superstitions? Yes I do. I always have to have my guardian angel medal with me. I also have a HD poker chip that I put in my bag. And before each trip I ask our guardian angels to watch over us on our journey.

Throttler Motorcycle Magazine - for riders, about riders, by riders

There is a new Motorcycle Magazine dedicated to motorcycles and the people who ride them, right here in Iowa! It's called Throttler Motorcycle Magazine and it's a free monthly publication that is distributed all across Iowa at your local motorcycle dealership, bars, banks, restaurants, and convenience stores. To find a location near you click on this link: http://www.throttlermagazine.com/throttlerDISTRIBUTE.html

Throttler promises to cover interest stories on riders, rallies and businesses across the state. They are looking for riders across Iowa to help them cover events and contribute photos. This is the perfect opportunity for the motorcycle communities in Iowa to help keep everyone informed about motorcycle issues and events going on across our fine state.

Throttler also has a website that you should visit. There are links to their advertisers that help make this magazine free to everyone. http://www.throttlermagazine.com/index.html I also noticed that if you are unable to pick up the lastest issue you can read a few of the stories on their website. Make sure you try to find a copy though because the pictures are great and their is a section dedicated to Iowans and pictures of them on their bikes. It's similar to "Snaps" in American Iron but the thing I like most about it was that Throttler let the rider write about themself and why they ride what they ride.

Best of luck to Roderick Kabel and his staff at Throttler Magazine. It's a great looking mag and I look forward to lots of great reading and photos in the coming months.

Is this Heaven? No it's Dyersville...

Actually when you drive/ride along the country roads on your way to Dyersville you feel like you are in heaven. I'm blogging tonight in Dyersville, IA at my sister and brother in law's house. I made the trip up to visit because I was missing my new niece and it's also my sister's birthday on Monday.(Happy Cinco de Margo!) It's pretty wild that a year ago her and I were partying and this weekend I watched my niece while her and Tim went on a date! Sydney and I had fun and she loved the song I made up for her to keep her from crying.

So what's up with this weather? It's been cold and rainy and less then desirable for long motorcycle trips. I actually believe it's been like this for many motorcycle enthusiasts throughout the USA. They actually had a blizzard in North Dakota. Everyone might need their parkas this year when they travel to Sturgis.

So I was mentioned on a Honda Blog as being one of the author's 100 Favorite Motorcycle blogs! I'm truly honored. Even if you are a Harley Lover check out this site http://www.honda-cb750.org/blog/ . We need to all stick together no matter what type of bike we decide to ride. We all have the same passion for 2 wheels and the wind in our hair and the feeling that it gives us each time we set out on the next journey. I was watching a motorcycle show one afternoon on the Speed channel and they were showing these sport bike trick riders and then they would talk to the people in the crowd to get their comments. There was this ODB who only road Harleys but who said that we all enjoy the same thing and should embrace each other and accept each other even if we don't ride the same bikes. It warmed my heart.

Final note for the evening...I guess since I stopped following the life of Billy Lane I had no idea that the Choppers Inc shop in Melbourne closed. I just read it on a new blog I discovered. http://www.mikeodom.name/ You can read more about Billy and what's going on with his life if you are interested. It's really too bad that a guy that had it all, lost it all because of something so stupid.

Well it's 11:30 0n a Saturday night and this chicks tired! Kinda sad huh? LOL

Random Stuff

It's January 12th, 2008. Have you broken your resolutions yet? My biggest resolution besides getting back to the gym is to treat everyone with respect and kindness. I don't think it's fair to judge someone until you get to know them...at that point you can decide if you want them in your life or would rather not go there with them. I've met some really awesome people through the years by living that way. I have such a variety of friends that I'm never bored! LOL

We spent Christmas Day in Dyersville with my sister and her husband and the families. Since we live in South/Central Iowa we usually have warmer weather then Northeast Iowa. Wow did they get the snow this year. I took a couple pictures of some cool snow drifts in front of my sister's place. It's snow art!

Dyersville doesn't just have the Field of Dreams. It also has the Basilica and this amazing shrine to Mary and Jesus just randomly on the end of a street. Tim, Margo, Dan, and I went driving around looking at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. I took a picture of the Shrine. It's very beautiful. If you drive around on the country roads in this part of NE Iowa you will see these Shrines on the edge of the road. It kind of makes the saying "Is this Heaven? No it's Iowa!" really make you feel like you are in God's Country. People knock Iowa all the time but honestly it's a great state. I will admit that there is a lot of corn during the summer and empty sad looking fields in the winter but the borders on the East and West sides of the state are amazing. Rolling hills and breathtaking views. And a great place to ride your motorcycle!

Last weekend we had some pretty nice weather for January. It got up in the 40's so Dan just couldn't stop himself. He was on the Zippy Pickle in a flash and took her for a scoot. I was a little jealous because I was going to go run an errand but I figured I'd let him have his time and enjoy the moment. I can only imagine the feeling of being on the open road alone with just your thoughts and the wind in your face. It must be amazing for sure! Someday it will be me and I won't have to ride b#$@h anymore.

Hope you are all having a great New Year and that you are enjoying each and every moment. One really cool thing...I've been nominated for a Blogger Award by the Biker Chick that writes Biker Chick News! I've put a link so that you can all check out her great blog! Thanks again to everyone that follows my blog! I've met some great people because of it and have read some great blogs that they've created. I think it's great how close knit the biker community is. I feel most at peace when I'm with a group of bikers. I always try to be myself and bikers take you for who you are. Have a fabulous weekend!!!

Get Your ODB Wear Today!!

I love Old Dirty Bikers and thought...what a great logo for a t-shirt! Trust me it's a great nickname to have...in my book an ODB is a man that lives for his motorcycle and if he had to make a choice between his Ol Lady and his motorcycle the motorcycle would win everytime!

I've created a few items in my ODBWear store so go check em out. I'm just starting with this so you'll have to check back often because I will be adding new items. Click the CafePress icon below and it will take you right to my store!

I have to be honest, the money that I make from selling these t-shirts is going into my motorcycle fund so that I can get my own ride!! So please support me and help me make my dream come true!!! :)
